Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

An internet asked scientists, "What is something that you believe but cannot prove?"
David Buss, psychologist from the University of Texas, answered:

I believe in true love.
I've spent two decades of my professional life studying human mating. In that time, I've documented phenomena ranging from what men and women desire in a mate to the most diabolical forms of sexual treachery. I've discovered the astonishingly creative ways in which men and women deceive and manipulate each other I've studied mate poachers, obsessed stalikers, sexual predators, and spouse murderers. But throughout this exploration of the dark dimensions of human mating, I've remained unwavering in my belief in true love.

While love is common, true love is rare, and I believe that few people are fortuante enough to experience it. The roads of regular love are well traveled and their markers are well understood by many -- the mesmerizing attraction, the ideational obseesion, the sexual afterglow, profound self-sacrifice, and the desire to combine DNA. But true love takes its own course through unchated territory. It knows no fences, has no barriers or boundaries. It's difficult to define, eludes modern measurement, and seems scientifically wooly. But I know true love exists. I just can't prove it.

I thought I would share that with you... my pathology professor posted it for us. I have never really been that into V-day. In fact, I have always felt that it was just another holiday Hallmark came up with to make more money. I guess I can't say that anymore considering my husband works for Hallmark, oops. I've been thinking lately too that life has been going WAY too fast. I'm not saying I am old or anything but there are so many things I miss that I will never be able to do again. I guess I just need to live more in the moment and take it all in before it passes me by.

Things I miss most:
1) The smell of Osakis on a nice spring night running along Pike Street...
2) Getting out of school to golf :)
3) Tubing with Kacie and Savannah (and Dave) in the summer
4) My mom and I driving to Alex and laughing about things only her and I would understand (probably Savannah and grandma too)
5) Walking into my Grandma's house and knowing I'll always be greeted with a smile and a hug, and probably offered some warm cookies too!
6) Playing in the sandbox or swinging with Savannah
7) Sitting in Mrs. Huso's (now Maddock's) back room with Tessa putting the yearbook together and listening to country music.
8) Pat and Jeff rolling me up into blankets.
9) Holding my siblings as little babies... they are only getting older.
10) The dating years, when Ryan and I had nothing to worry about but to be with each other... and of course going to class :) (Although, I love him even more now than I ever did then)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone...
Love-
Raquel

What do you need?

At the request of my sister... I promise to blog as much as I can... I usually write in a journal and I tell you this is much easier! On Tuesday night in my first MBA class that I am starting along with medical school (I think I am crazy!) we were given a page of riddles we had to solve in teams of 8 and the team that got the most right won the prize... although we did not know what it was. Needless to say, my team did not win (I am not a riddle solver). Each member on the team that won got to stand up in front of the class and state a need they had. Not something you want but NEED. One girl said she needed help repairing her broken windshield, another needed some creative wedding gifts for her brothers wedding under $50, and another said he would love to be set up for a date on Valentine's day (it was very sweet). Then everyone in the class, if they could help out these requests in any way they told the person so they could get their need accomplished... and everyone got more than they needed from the class.

After this I got to thinking... what is it do I need? I think many of us walk along this so called journey of life and we don't let people help us. What is it that you need, or the ones around me need for that matter that I don't even consider? I know there are lots of things I could think of but never thought to ask help for. My challenge for everyone is to reach out when you need something, and also be one to help out someone who needs it. Even if it means letting them merge on the highway or giving them a hug when they are sad. I know I am not always very good at this.

Also want to ask everyone to keep my dad in your prayers. He is in the hospital (he'll be fine) and will be there for about a week, but I feel so bad. Thank you for that.

Always-
Raquel

What a Day...

I just recently saw the movie "Juno" because of all the hype that has been put around it. I was talking about it today in class and someone told me that they didn't want to go see the movie because teen pregnancy is bad... who the heck are these people? It actually has been bugging me all day. I am definitely not trying to promote teen pregnancy but what about it is so awful? I am a firm believer in not judging someone or the situation they are in unless you can put yourself in their shoes and most of the time, you can't. I can truthfully say that I am a product of a non-planned, young couple relationship and although at the time my parents were probably scared to death, I am so thankful it happened [and so are they... I think :)]. Does that make them bad people? No. This is my opinion anyway, it does not make me right. I don't know why it bothered me so much... just my rant for the day.

Other than that... I have no updates. I feel like everyone around me have so many things going on in their lives that I have absolutely no right to complain about anything... but be thankful for what I do have and pray for the ones who need it most.

Until Next Time-
Raquel

Hello All

I don't know if I will be as interesting as some other blogs I have read but I thought it would be fun to give little updates here and there.

For those of you who do not know, I just recently married the love of my life, Ryan. It is hard to explain in words why I love him so much but I do know this...

1) I can be the nerd that I have always been around him... and always will be.
2) I'll catch him just looking at me for no reason at all... smiling
3) The time we do have together is still not enough
4) & ... he has somehow managed to get me rooting for the Packers... as much as that bothers me he did it... I must really love him!

Enough of the sappy stuff. I am sorry I have not posted any pictures of the wedding yet... we will be getting them soon and know that when I get them, I will post.

As for everything else, we are living in Overland Park, Kansas which is a suburb of Kansas City. I LOVE IT HERE. Not only the people and the warmer weather but just everything about it... there is so much to do. The only thing about it is I miss my family tremendously. Yesterday when I was at Blockbuster I saw a movie Savannah has been telling me she wants to see and I almost started crying... what a nerd I am... and whenever I talk to my little siblings on the phone I want to reach out and hug them! However, I have made some wonderful friends here so that really helps.

For those who do not know, I am a 1st year medical student at Kansas City University of Medicine which is a school of osteopathy. If anyone would like to know more about it let me know because I'd be happy to tell you... I truly believe in its philosophy and intend on using it for the benefit of my patients when I actually get to be a doctor. I do not know what type of medicine I want to practice but it will eventually come to me. I have to feel it out a bit before I make such a decision. The problem is I am interested in just about every kind of medicine. I am currently learning about the heart and lungs and am now convinced that taking fish oil every day is one of the best things you can do for your heart... besides exercise of course. I love medicine and eventhough the studies are rigorous, I find much comfort in knowing I am learning things that will hopefully save some lives someday... if only one. I believe God has brought me here for a reason and that I am fulfilling my calling.

I will keep you updated as new things come up. Thank you for reading.
